I almost died once.
It happened in 2011. I’ll spare you the awful details — except to say the dead part of my colon wrapped itself around my bladder — but I endured three excruciatingly painful surgeries that year. To make it worse, I’d lost my job the previous year: I was just getting started as a freelancer. We were poor and I was in pain and it felt like nothing would ever be good again.
We lived in Philadelphia then. Jo had a job in the suburbs. She would get up every morning at 5 to change the dressings on my surgical wounds, commute an hour to her job, work all day, commute an hour back, come home to change the dressings again, then make dinner for our family.
And she did this for months.
That year nearly broke me. I think it nearly broke her.
But she stuck with me because she loves me. And I love her so.
Today we’ve been married 17 years.
And you’ll never hear me make a wife joke.
Happy anniversary to Joel and Jo!
Jo is legend. Happiest anniversary!
