Two questions about Donald Trump and Iran:
* Why would Trump want to go to war with Iran now?
* Is the United States already at war with Iran?
Let's try to answer both those questions quickly.
First: it really is weird that Trump wants to jump into the Israel-Iran war at this stage of things. Israel seems to have A) weakened Iran's leadership and B) weakened Iran's nuclear program. Arguably the major goal of any war against Iran -- short of regime change, I suppose -- is already well on its way to being met.
Which means what is likely happening right now is that Trump sees the chance to score what he thinks will be an easy victory and is thinking about jumping in now that a lot of the dirty work has apparently been done.
And that, in turn, means Trump would be putting U.S. troops in danger -- not to mention adding to the death toll in Iran -- for the sheer funsies of it.
He's a bully. No surprise there.
Second: Trump has demanded Iran's "unconditional surrender," has provided a defense against Iran's retaliation against Israel, and and has made clear that the United States is both rooting on and arming Israel's attacks.
I don't know if the United States is at war with Iran. But I bet the Iranians think we are.
I have never bought the idea that Trump was a dove. And I knew that his second term would be far, far worse than his first. I certainly didn't think he'd be this close to embroiling the U.S. in a Middle East war before the six-month mark of his second-chance presidency.
What a disaster.
What a disaster, indeed. Yeah, this sad and sorid situation is, for sure, just "funsies" for that guy.
Also, Trump isn’t a dove but he hates “losing,” and can be stunningly risk-averse if his image is at stake. He will get the US actively involved (IOW, ordering the bunker-busters) only if Israel has already won the rest of the war. (See — TACO and his reaction to the acronym)
