I have seen the movie and I thought it was a really good portrayal of generational alcoholism. I've read the book too and I don't think it really focused on the same themes necessarily.
You're surely correct, of course. But have you actually seen the movie? I haven't. Haven't read Vance's book either. My wife has; she liked it, but didn't love it.
I’m OK with Apollo 13, which just showed here on the big screen last weekend. Howard’s a solid craftsman, but I always feel like his movies are missing a layer.
Yeah, I really don't know if anyone has ever said anything about him except "solid." I'm sure somewhere there's somebody who has a whole website about the genius auteur Ron Howard, but I'm not going to bother Googling for it.

Read the book, but not the movie. I tend not to be a Ron Howard fan!
I like Parenthood, Apollo 13, and Frost/Nixon. Willow, of course, is wonderful and iconic (which is not the same thing as "great").
