"Incurred" also make its sound like it cost the US something, like a debt or obligation, or that those deaths are a burden or problematic to the US, e.g. The US now needs to feel bad about killing civilians...

Thank you for the Paths of Glory recommendation, it has been decades since I have watched it and I am going to watch it tonight.

Another great example of this is when a suspect "was shot" rather than saying officer X shot the subject. Radley Balko calls it the exculpatory passive voice.

I should watch Paths of Glory again. I'm a Kubrick completist, but a couple of his films I haven't seen in decades, and this is one of them.

It's Kubrick-lite -- recognizable themes and motifs (there's even Blue Danube at one point) - but a lean 86-minute runtime and extremely straightforward about the story being told.
